Polar Bear Declared Threatened
The Interior Department declared the polar bear a threatened species Wednesday, saying it must be protected because of the decline in Arctic sea ice from global warming.

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne cited dramatic declines in sea ice over the last three decades and projections of continued losses. These declines, he told a news conference, mean the polar bear is a species likely to be in danger of extinction in the near future.

Kempthorne also said, though, that it would be "inappropriate" to use the protection of the bear to reduce greenhouse gases, or to broadly address climate change.

Minnesota Sharpshooters Kill 962 Deer
Sharpshooters have finished for now trying to dramatically thin the deer herd in part of northwestern Minnesota plagued by bovine tuberculosis.

Shooting from the ground and a helicopter, federal and private sharpshooters killed 962 deer -- more than had been estimated to inhabit the 164-square-mile core area in January. The sharpshooting began in February and ended Friday.

Ban On Shooting Prairie Dogs Rejected
A citizen’s petition to ban the recreational shooting of prairie dogs came to a quick death Thursday at the hands of the Colorado Wildlife Commission.

Testimony on the controversial issue raised concerns on one side about cruelty to animals and hunting ethics and equally fervent concerns on the other side about protecting private property rights, game-damage control and introducing youths to hunting. It took more than an hour and was dominated by opponents to the petition.

Delisting Of Wolves Brings Lawsuit
Environmental and animal rights groups sued the federal government Monday, seeking to restore endangered species status for gray wolves in the Northern Rockies.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lifted federal protections for the estimated 1,500 wolves in March. It turned over management responsibilities to state officials in Idaho, Wyoming and Montana for the first time in more than three decades.

The lawsuit alleges those states lack adequate laws to ensure wolves are not again eradicated from the region. At least 37 were killed in the last month.

Salmon Fishing In Coastal Waters Banned
Californians won't be eating fresh salmon from the state's coastal waters this year.

Fish and Game officials on Tuesday reluctantly voted to shelter a diminished population of Sacramento River chinook by barring all ocean salmon fishing in state waters, out three miles from shore.

The unprecedented closure will last through April 2009.

Two Decades Of Zebra Mussels
Two decades after zebra mussels were discovered in the Great Lakes, some scientists are calling the foreign mollusks the most harmful exotic species ever to invade the world's largest freshwater ecosystem.

Several prominent researchers contend dreissenid mussels -- zebra and quagga mussels -- have caused more profound changes in the lakes than sea lamprey, which decimated lake trout and other native fish species in the mid-1900s.

Wildlife Services Receive Kill Permit
At least 10 gray wolves have now been killed in Wyoming since the animals were removed from the federal endangered species list.

All of the canines have been killed in the state's new wolf predator management area, where it is now legal to shoot the animals on sight. All 10 have been taken in Sublette County.

Wolves Delisted
The gray wolf is off the list of threatened and endangered species in Montana and can now legally be shot if caught in the act of attacking livestock.

A hunting season is possible this fall.

"It's the next chapter in this grand experiment called wolf restoration," said Carolyn Sime, the wolf program coordinator for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks.
